About the event
Sushi 101: A Hands-On Experience
Learn the art of sushi in this hands-on, beginner-friendly class designed to demystify one of Japan’s most iconic cuisines. From perfectly seasoned rice to rolling your own sushi, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to create fresh, beautiful sushi at home.
Guided by Chef Dean Wangwright, founder of Umami Lab, you’ll start with the fundamentals—how to properly prepare and season sushi rice, the foundation of every great roll. You’ll then learn essential knife skills and ingredient preparation, working with fresh vegetables and fish while understanding balance, texture, and presentation.
As the class progresses, you’ll practice rolling a variety of sushi styles, from classic maki rolls to inside-out rolls, learning proper technique, portioning, and how to achieve clean, tight rolls. Along the way, our chefs will share tips on sourcing ingredients, handling fish safely, and building flavor with simple, high-quality components.
